The Petrology and Solid Geochemisty Research Group (Prof. Fujimaki's Group) is one of the six research groups* of Department of Earth and Planetary Materian Science of Tohoku University**. Our people comprises two staffs (professor Hirokazu Fujimaki and associate proffesor Tsukasa Ohba), graduate students, research fellows, and B4 undergraduate students. Students study earth science through working on their own research topics in the group, as well as lectures of the department.
Our reserach method is deciphering histories and essences hidden in natural earth & planetary materials (rocks, minerals, and water) by microscopes and chemical analysis. We also do geologic ovservation, geophysical measurements, experiments, calculation, and developments of analytical method as needed.
The group is small but our research field is huge, including (1) Petrology and geochemisty of meteorite, ultramafic rocks, fossil, etc. (2) mineralogy and geochemistry related to environmental issues, (3) geochemical approach to earthquake predition, (4) rock-water interaction, and (5) volcanology and igneous petrology.
Our international activity includes acceptance of many mongolian sudents and foreing researchers, sabattical in New Zealand, and field reserach in Mongolia, China, Chile, and New Zealand. As there are some IGPAS students (The International Graduate Program for Advanced Science), our language is English as well as Japanese.
Academic-industrial cooperating research on environmental issues has launched. During the last few years, we have been working on asbestos crisis issues in cooperation with a private company.
*: A research group comprises a few stuff members, graduate students, B4 undergraduate students, and some other people such as research fellows.
**: The department is offically separated the graduate school from the undergraduate department, but the practical organization includes both the graduate school and the undergraduate department (higher than 2nd grade). The undergraduate department is Department of Earth and Planetary Material Science, Faculty of Science. Every year, ca. twenty B2 students who had enrolled the Earth Science Courseare assigned to the department at the middle of the school year. Graduate students and most of staff belong to the Graduate School. Our graduate school includes Earth and Planetary Material Science Division, Comparative Solid Planetology Division, Reserch Group of Reaction and Kinetics in the Earth Interior (Cooperation programmes with Agency of Instrial Science and Technology), the cooperationg group of Volcanology Science Research Group of Center for Northeast Asian Studies, and cooperating members of Tohoku University Museum and Center for the Advancement of Higher Education.
